In the “old days” Labor Day marked the end of summer; that one last picnic ended early as kids prepared to go back to school on the following Tuesday or Wednesday.  Now, schools starts in Louisville in mid August, which makes Labor Day the first official school holiday.  In either case, there are plenty of special things to do in Louisville that make it summer’s last hurrah.

You can have a picnic at one of the nearbyKentucky State parks and enjoy camping and fishing while you are there. But, there is a whole lot more to do in the Louisville area.

The traditional Greater Louisville United Labor Day Picnic at the Zoo offers funs a full day of fun for union members and their families.  Priced at only $5 for members who buy them in advance, admission includes picnic fare and a car show in addition to zoo exhibits and rides.

What better way to celebrate Labor Day in the Bluegrass State than with three days of bluegrass bands?  Celebrated at Water Tower on River Road & Zorn Ave., the Kentucky Bluegrass Festival will feature bands like Danny Paisley and The Southern Grass, the Lonesome River Band, and Whiskey Bent.  You can enjoy great barbeque, bourbon, and beer, while the kids enjoy special festivities just for them.

Biking is a big deal in Louisville, which prides itself on being healthy and green.  From 9:00 a m to noon,  the Mayor’s Healthy Hometown Subway Fresh Fit Hike and Bike Series is fun for the family.  The ride route starts at Witherspoon St. and goes to Shawnee Park. Kids are invited to come for to Flock of Finns sculptures early for the bike rodeo to learn tips for successful riding.

Want to attend one of the Top 10 Summer Festivals and Even for 2010 according to the Kentucky Tourism Council (KTC)?   Catch the culturally-themed Worldfest at the Belvedere at 5^th and Main Streets, On September 4^th and 5^th.  Spotlighting the many cultures in Louisville, the event will honor new citizens after a naturalization ceremony with a Parade of Culture, unique booths, music of the world, and an assortment of ethnic foods.  The World of Children will have international games and crafts.

From September 3^rd – 7th, the KY Flea Market Labor Day Spectacular at Kentucky Fair and Expo Center will have 1,200 booths, including a special Antique and Collectible building with over 400 booths.  Over 70,000 shoppers and exhibitors come for 15 states to enjoy the array of jewelry, crafts, candles, overstock, grocery items, and more
